There is special attention for industrial discipline in the nineteenth century and for the various authoritarian régimes of the twentieth. The contributors show that even "totalitarian" social control was far from total. My introduction provides a historical and formal analysis of the concept of social control.

Published in 1998, this book was the first to explicitly link violence and gender. Up to then, the concept of gender had been applied to women only, not to masculinity. Dueling is a key theme. Next to the elite or formal duel, attention is paid to the popular duel - again a concept first proposed in this book. One of my two contributions is about knife fighting in Amsterdam.
