This book results from a conference held at the occasion of the quatrocentennial, in 1990, of Dirk Volkertsz Coornhert's death. It combines historical and contemporary perspectives on criminal law. My own contribution places Coornhert's Boeventucht (the discipline of rogues) in its historical context.
